The baby boomers is defined s the generation that started in 1946 with World War II and ended in 1964 with the birth control pill.
On January 1, 2011 there were 77,000,000 baby boomers in the USA. From January 1 onwards between 7,000 and 10,000 boomers will turn 65 each day. This will continue for the next 18 years
As of January 1, 2011 there were 4,600,000 Baby Boomers in Florida, the fourth most in the nation.
The manner in which the baby generation lives will have a huge impact on the economy of the United States and in Florida and the implications of the changing demographic for housing and for commercial real estate in Florida cannot be ignored
Expenditures for health related costs will soar. By 2020 the annual cost of Medicare will soar by 80% with 80 million Americans being on Medicare as compared to 47 million today. There will be leisure demands to be met. The Boomers are an active generation. Nearly one fourth of the membership of the USA Triathlon and USA Cycling is Baby Boomers. 36% of Internet users are boomers, the fastest growing segment using social media. The education level is high with almost 29 % of boomers holding a college degree and an additional 29% having some college education. They will continue to be active in the workforce. Only 13% of boomers turning 65 this year are planning to retire completely in 2011. 65% of the boomers are married. 17% are divorced. 12 % have never been married.
Currently, Florida has 18% of the population over the age of 65. This number will rise to 27% by 2030.

• 2.2 million boomer men
• 2.4 million boomer women
Boomers in Florida in 2011 comprise approx 25% of the population
With 28-30 % of the residents of boomers, Pinellas County has the highest concentration of boomers in the Tampa Bay area.
